12th International Jean Sibelius Violin Competition Postponed Until Spring 2022

12.6.2020

The 12th International Jean Sibelius Violin Competition has been rescheduled for May 18–29 2022. The competition was originally set to take place in Helsinki in late November and early December 2020, but due to global uncertainty around possible travel and assembly restrictions imposed to battle the coronavirus pandemic, the competition committee has decided to postpone the event.

The new dates were selected on the basis of multiple factors: the availability of the venues at Sibelius Academy and Helsinki Music Centre and schedules and previous commitments of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as those of the competition jury.

To ensure the fairness of the postponement procedure for all applicants, the 2022 edition of the competition will be open to all violinists born in or after 1990.

“The safety and health of our competitors, their local hosts, the numerous musicians and staff involved and of course our audience is of utmost importance to us.

We are very grateful to everyone involved in organising the competition and to our sponsors for joining us in building this magnificent competition again in 2022”, chairman of the Sibelius Society of Finland and the competition committee Mr. Lauri Ratia commented.

Postponing the 12th edition of the Sibelius Violin Competition will not affect the competition’s regular long-term schedule and the 13th edition will be held in the end of 2025.
